Explorations in Weaving

The following samples are brief explorations into the use of material and color in weaving. I explored materiality, using traditional weaving materials like yarns and thread as well as less traditional materials like metals and foams. I explored color, from the dynamic and whimsical to the subdued and elegant. These pieces were produced an a frame loom.

Lemony Soft Candy Swatch

This weaving plays with bright, saturated colors and a various foams to create a whimsical and energetic aesthetic. The sharpness of orange thread contrasts with the squishy quality of the foam sheets and the yellow half-circles provide openings in the textile to balance the density of the foam.

Colors – Camo green, cream, colbalt blue, cool gray, peach, candy red, lemon ice, neon orange

Materials – Foam sheet, foam pipe, polyester thread

Silver Fox Swatch

This weaving featured large rectangular blocks, separated by sharp contrasting warp threads to create a modern, geometric aesthetic. Woven metallic elements peak through the soft base, counteracting the severity of the blocks with their organic wave.

Colors – Cloud gray, cobalt blue, copper

Materials – Medium acrylic yarn, super fine cotton yarn, copper wire

Fuzzy Nebula Swatch

This weaving has a lot going on. This work plays with the idea of using density to balance what could potentially be visually overstimulating. A preposterously fuzzy orange yarn bursts through layers of deep blue. The asymmetric piece is topped by a layer of silver mylar, creating a definitive stop that responds to the airy openings in the middle.

Colors – Crimson red and orange peach, cobalt blue, silver

Materials – Super fine cotton yarn, acrylic yarn, mylar
